5 Free Design Resources

Sometimes, you don’t have all of the resources you need to bring your project. Whether it’s a personal creative project or a client project, it’s never perfect, and trust me, it will never be perfect. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t begin.

Here are my favorite 5 free design resources that you can use too!

Uno: unsplash.com

I’ve been following this website for years. At first, they would upload 10-12 photos a week and now they have thousands of photos anyone can use. They have everything from travel, people, groups, products, you name it! This comes in handy when you or your client don’t have photos you feel confident using.

Dos: iconmonstr.com

Not all icons have to be custom. Sure, if you have a specific “look” to your design you might want to make your own but it’s nice when you need a common icon. This website allows you to download the icon in different formats; SVG, EPS, PSD, or PNG.

Tres: 0to255.com

If you ever need to find a combination containing only tones of a single color, this is the tool to use. You just simply input the hex number and the tool generates lighter and darker options you can choose from.

Cuatro: lipsum.com

I use lorem ipsum every time I’m working on client projects and they haven’t sent over the copy they want to use. It creates a nice guideline to the number of words all sections look with the design. You don’t want to overload the user with text after all.

But, I use lorem ipsum for all my personal projects as well. Mainly blog posts! Sometimes it’s easier to get the layout of my blog post in place, add all my images, play around with spacing, and then add my copy.

Remember, you don’t always have to start with copy before layout and design. Sometimes working backwards is the best way!

Cinco: thebestdesigns.com

We all need inspiration. That’s what design is all about. Creating something beautiful but sometimes you get stuck. This website is a great tool to find inspiration in a variety of categories such as color, minimalism, photography-heavy, and more. It’s a great tool to keep updated with current design trends on the web but just because they’re websites that don’t mean you can only use them for web design inspiration.
